Why did Harrison "Jack" Schmidt throw a hammer on his lunar mission just before he left the Moon?

One of the last things that Harrison H. "Jack" Schmitt did while on the surface of the moon at the end of the last lunar EVA of the Apollo program was to throw their one and only Geology hammer off into the distance.

Here is a video of Jack throwing the hammer - coolest astronaut ever! https://www.youtube.com/wat...

The hammer has been found in photos taken on the Moon by Gene Cernan: https://www.hq.nasa.gov/als...

For the uninitiated, the hammer toss is something geologists do to amuse themselves during the long hours spent in the field. Schmidt is a PhD Geologist from Caltech and he was the only civilian astronaut that flew in the Apollo program.
